About GiveWell
Based in Oakland, CA, GiveWell is a nonprofit that uses research to help donors decide where to donate their money for maximum impact toward worthwhile causes.
While the net result of GiveWell’s research is an evidence-backed investment recommendation, its focus is not solely on the financials and cost assessment. GiveWell prides itself in conducting in-depth research to determine how much good a program accomplishes per dollar spent. GiveWell in turn recommends these high-impact giving opportunities to donors.
Through these efforts, GiveWell has identified and currently recommends nine top nonprofits working to support people’s basic needs by preventing malaria, reducing vitamin A deficiency, supporting immunizations, treating children for parasitic worms, and giving direct cash transfers. GiveWell updates its top charity list annually to reflect its updated understanding of its organizations, and all of GiveWell’s research, top charity lists, and funding recommendations are free and publicly available so that any donor can have access to high-quality information to inform their impact-based giving.
GiveWell & Zoom Cares
With a $1.1 million grant from Zoom Cares, GiveWell has been able to elevate its Maximum Impact Fund. GiveWell recommends its donors seeking to do the most good possible to donate to the Maximum Impact Fund, which consists of the recommended charity (or charities) with the highest priority funding needs at the time based on GiveWell’s research. GiveWell’s Maximum Impact Fund has supported several organizations, including Evidence Action’s Deworm the World Initiative, Against Malaria Foundation, and Helen Keller International. More than 85,000 donors have trusted GiveWell to direct their donations. Together, donors have given more than $1 billion to the organizations GiveWell recommends.
